Startup Fundraising Financial Documents Preparing a Consistent Review Set
Startup fundraising financial documents should let an investor understand the company's current position, the assumptions behind its plan, and the evidence supporting the figures presented. Prepare the reports available for your stage, label their periods and status, and reconcile the numbers used across the deck and investor materials with your finance lead or accountant.
Confirm the requested scope before assembling the set. A company with a long operating history and a pre-revenue startup will have different information available. Explain those differences instead of filling gaps with reports that imply a history the company does not have.
Identify the reporting period and basis
For each report, state the period covered, preparation date, and whether figures are final or provisional. Ask the person responsible for the accounts to confirm how the figures should be described. Keep the source report available alongside any summary.
If an investor requests information you do not maintain, explain what is available and ask whether it addresses the underlying question. Cooley GO's sample VC request list includes financial statements and reports as examples, but the applicable request set should be agreed for your company and transaction.
Separate historical results from the forecast
Historical reporting describes the period already measured. A forecast expresses assumptions about what may happen next. Label them clearly and identify where the forecast begins, especially when a chart combines earlier results with a future plan.
Maintain notes for the assumptions that most affect the model, including hiring, spending, and expected customer receipts. Describe when each is expected to occur and who supplied the basis. An assumption should remain visible when a summary is copied into the deck.
Reconcile figures used in different materials
Compare the important financial statements in the deck with the current report and model. Check the period, unit, currency, and definition used for each number. Record explanations for changes instead of choosing the most persuasive figure from several versions.
For a hypothetical startup, the deck shows a cash balance measured at month end, while the latest report reflects a later payment. Both figures may describe different dates. The investor needs the relevant dates and an explanation of the intervening event to understand the current position.
Connect the capital request to a working plan
Explain which milestones the raise is intended to support and how the planned spending relates to them. Have the team check whether the hiring and development schedules match the budget. Identify dependencies that could change the timing.
If a plan assumes a contract will renew, describe that renewal as an assumption until its status is confirmed. A forecast built around a hoped-for receipt should not be presented as evidence that payment has already been secured.
Prepare an explanation for unresolved questions
Track each question with the relevant figure, source, responsible person, and next action. Ask the accountant or finance lead to assess issues about reporting treatment. Keep any interim answer qualified and retain the final explanation when it is confirmed.

Maintain the financial evidence while fundraising
Set a review point when a reporting period closes or an event materially changes the plan. Decide which materials and investor responses need updating. Keep the previous record appropriately, with the current version clearly identified.
