How to Update a Pitch Deck Without Changing the Link
It happens in every raise. You send your deck to twenty investors, then you close a new customer, fix a typo on slide 7, or update your traction chart. Now some investors have the old version, and sending a new link to everyone looks disorganized.
The solution is to share your deck through a link that always points to the current version.
Why sending a new link causes problems
- Investors may open the wrong version. The old email is still in their inbox.
- Forwarded copies keep circulating. An attachment or an old link may be passed to partners.
- You lose your tracking history if the new link is a separate document.
- It looks like a correction, which draws attention to the mistake rather than the progress.
Options for updating a deck without changing the link
Option 1: Google Slides or Google Drive
If you shared a Google Slides link, edits appear for anyone with the link. In Google Drive, you can upload a new version of a file to replace the old one while keeping the same link.
Limitations: no engagement tracking, permissions can become messy, and if an investor downloaded a PDF, they still have the old version.
Option 2: Dropbox or similar file storage
Overwriting a file with the same name in a shared folder generally keeps the link working.
Limitations: same as above. No insight into who viewed what.
Option 3: A deck tracking tool
Tools like DocChief, DocSend, and Papermark let you replace the document behind a link while keeping the link and its analytics.
How to do it in DocChief
With a DocChief sharing link, the link is the constant and the documents are what change:
- Open the sharing link in your DocChief workspace.
- Replace the deck with the new version, or add or remove other files such as your FAQ or financials.
- Save. Investors who open the link see the updated materials immediately.
You keep the same link, the same access settings, and the full engagement history: who opened it, which files they viewed, how long they spent, and what they asked the AI assistant. Every DocChief plan, including the free plan, supports updating content without changing the link.
Should you tell investors you updated the deck?
For minor fixes, no. For meaningful updates, such as a new customer, a lead investor, or a strong month, yes. It is a reason to follow up: "Quick update: we closed two new enterprise customers this month. The deck at the same link reflects the new numbers."
Version control tips for founders
- Keep one master deck and maintain a simple version log with dates.
- Do not put version numbers in the file name investors see. "Acme Pitch Deck" reads better than "Acme_v14_FINAL2."
- Use separate links for different audiences rather than separate deck versions sent as attachments.
- Archive old versions rather than deleting them, in case you need to know what an investor saw.

Frequently asked questions
Can I edit a PDF after sending it as an attachment?
No. Once an attachment is sent, the recipient's copy cannot be changed or revoked. Use a link instead.
Does updating a deck reset the tracking data?
In DocChief, no. The link keeps its engagement history after you replace the document.
Will investors know the deck was updated?
Not unless you tell them or they notice the changes. Mention meaningful updates as a reason to follow up.
Can I update other files in the same link?
Yes. DocChief links can hold multiple files, and you can add or remove files without creating a new link.
